What is an antibody?

● Antibodies are proteins developed by the immune system and are the most important response by our body to fight an infection.

● Antibodies are developed after a vaccine or natural infection. The first to appear are type IgM that disappear after a couple weeks.

● IgG antibodies help fight infections and are memory antibodies, their function is to protect our body and prevent it from getting sick again.

● The duration of this protection is different for every illness and varies within individuals.

How long do SARS-CoV-2 antibodies last?

● There’s still not enough precise information that indicates how long do associated antibodies developed by an infection or an immunization process last.

What is the purpose a COVID-19 antibody test?

● An antibody test allows you to know if your body has developed antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

● An antibody test allows us to know if there was a recent COVID-19 infection or if any immune response was generated.

● Recommended for people with COVID-19, post COVID-19, or after vaccination.

How reliable is the quantitative serological test?

● The quantitative serological test has a 98% accuracy.

What is a COVID-19 antibody test?

● A blood sample is taken and serum is obtained. From serum, we can measure in a reliable way the presence of antibodies by using immunochemical methods.

● This test detects antibodies directed against spicula’s viral proteins and nucleocapsids that are useful to evaluate the immune response after contact with the virus or vaccination.

How should you prepare for an antibody COVID-19 test?

● At least 4 hour fasting.

Can I get the COVID-19 antibody test to know if I have the virus?

● The antibody test does not indicate an active infection, It may indicate if we are recovering from an infection. IgG antibodies appear 21 days after the start of the infection

How long do SARS-CoV-2 antibodies last?

● There’s still not enough precise information that indicates how long do associated antibodies developed by an infection or an immunization process last.

What does COV (Cut off value) mean in the results’ report?

● The cut off value is an internal value of the analytical process to determine the presence or absence of antibodies. It is an internal control of the system we use to determine if a sample is positive or negative to the presence of antibodies.

It does not indicate the amount of antibodies in the patient.

¿Las diferentes vacunas pueden alterar el resultado de la prueba?

● No, the test is reliable regardless of the vaccine type used to immunize the patient.

What is the difference between the rapid antibody test and the serological quantitative test?

● The rapid test is an immunochromatographic test. This test  uses blood from the capillaries and detects the presence of IgG and IgM. These tests were used in the early beginnings of the pandemic to determine if someone was going through an infection, however, its precision and sensitivity are not the best due to the amount of antibodies available in a drop of blood.

The serological test is more precise

as it uses an electrochemical process that is more sensitive to the presence of antibodies .

How long does it take to get results?

● Rapid test in 20 minutes and serological in 24-48 hours

How long after the second dose of the vaccine is it recommended to take the test?

● After 7 days

● It may take from one to three weeks. after the exposure with the virus for the antibody levels to be detectable in the test. The person may be infected even if the antibody test result is negative.

● These tests are still under investigation and it is attempted to determine if the antibodies they detect may protect the body against future infections. No one should be considered immune to a COVID-19 infection based on these results. Measures to prevent future infections must be taken even if the antibody test result is positive.
